SCBA in Service to the Community

The Schenectady County Bar Association provides a variety of initiatives in service to the community through attorneys who volunteer their time and experience. Among these initiatives:

  • Modest means panel providing reduced fee service to Family Court and Matrimonial litigants with cases pending in Schenectady County available to those eligible under income guidelines. CURRENTLY NOT ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS. Learn more
  • Law Day activities that include such activities as “Ask-a-Lawyer” opportunities to inquire about basic legal questions; educational presentations to the public and students, and Liberty Bell Award recognition of non-lawyers for service to the justice system.
  • Coaching and guiding students in Schenectady County high schools in preparing for the High School Mock Tournament held across the state.
  • Speakers to community and educational organizations – contact info@schenectadycountybar.org if your civic or nonprofit organization or school would like a speaker on the justice system
  • SCBA awards – The Association presents awards to recognize outstanding service of its members, including Lawyer of the Year, Lawyer in Service to the Community, and Young Lawyer. Learn more
  • Law student scholarship – SCBA administers the John Alexander Scholarship Fund, created through the Will of Elizabeth Alexander, widow of John Alexander to provide scholarships for Schenectady County residents who are full-time candidates for Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Law degree from an accredited law school in New York State. Inquiries and applications can be made to Alexander Scholarship Fund, Supreme Court Chambers, 612 State Street, Schenectady NY 12305. Applications are due by December 1 for scholarships awarded in the next calendar year.
